The Weill Cornell Sphere Regional Hospitals

The Weill Cornell (WCM) Campus, the quaternary academic medical center, has three regional hospitals associated with it within the WCM Sphere. On July 1, 2013, NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital (NYP) announced that New York Downtown Hospital had become its newest campus. The 180- bed community hospital was renamed NYP/ Lower Manhattan Hospital (LMH) and remains the only hospital south of 14th Street in Manhattan. LMH operates 170 beds and serves 130,000 patients per year. On July 1, 2015, New York Hospital Queens became NewYork- Presbyterian Queens (NYP/Q). NYP/Q, a 535-bed acute care hospital and Level I trauma center in Flushing, NY, provides services to 318,000 patients per year. On December 16th, 2016, New York Methodist Hospital became NYP/Brooklyn Methodist Hospital (BMH). NYP/BMH is in Park Slope in Brooklyn. The academic hospital has 591 beds and provides services to approximately 542,000 patients each year.

Specialties

The patient population of NYPQ reflects that of Queens NY, the most culturally diverse county in the United States, consisting of Asian, Hispanic, Black, and other racial/ethnic groups. More than 35 languages are spoken in the greater Flushing NY area and by patients at NYPQ, who originate from more than120 countries. Fifty-five percent of Queens patients’ primary language is not English. The Queens department has subspecialized pathologists in: Hematopathology/Flow, Transfusion Medicine, Microbiology/Molecular Micro, Neuropathology, Breast, GYN/Perinatal, Genitourinary, Pulmonary, Gastrointestinal, Pediatrics and Cytology.
Brooklyn is one of the most diverse boroughs in New York City and the United States as a whole. It is home to communities with roots in many different parts of the world, including Caribbean, African, Latin American, European, Asian, and Middle Eastern cultures. The BMH department has 8 subspecialty- trained pathologists in: Transfusion Medicine, Gynecology and Obstetrics, Gastrointestinal, Cytopathology and Renal. The surgical pathology cases are assigned to subspecialities including: 1. Gastrointestinal, 2. Breast, 3. GYN/ Perinatal, 4. Genitourinary, 5. Head & Neck/Thoracic, 6. Cytopathology, 7. Neuropathology (to WCM) and 9. Hematopathology (to WCM).
LMH is a community-based hospital serving the highly diverse residential communities of Chinatown, the Financial District, SoHo, TriBeCa, Battery Park City, and the Lower East Side. It is the only hospital south of 14th street in Manhattan and will be the sole hospital south of 26th street. The LMH department has 3 subspecialty-trained pathologists in: Transfusion Medicine, Breast and Cytopathology and Oncologic Surgical Pathology Subspecialty signout is not currently performed at LMH, but the goal is to convert to subspecialty signout by integrating the service with WCM.
