The patient population of NYPQ reflects that of Queens NY, the most culturally diverse county in the United States, consisting of Asian, Hispanic, Black, and other racial/ethnic groups. More than 35 languages are spoken in the greater Flushing NY area and by patients at NYPQ, who originate from more than120 countries. Fifty-five percent of Queens patients’ primary language is not English.
The Queens department has subspecialized pathologists in: Hematopathology/Flow, Transfusion Medicine, Microbiology/Molecular Micro, Neuropathology, Breast, GYN/Perinatal, Genitourinary, Pulmonary, Gastrointestinal, Pediatrics and Cytology.
Anatomic pathology cases in Queens are signed out as a group practice. Cases are not always assigned to subspecialist pathologists. Subspecialist pathologists consult with colleagues for frozen sections and significant cases before signout.
Notable Achievements
- The NYPQ Pathology Department has established IRB-approved biorepository operations within the CLIA umbrella of the laboratory in 2013. The department has banked specimens from 2213 consented patients for future research. The case distribution in 2023 was: 62% GYN, 29% Breast, 8% GI, 1% Pulmonary. Reported race/ethnicity of patients’ banked specimens matches Queens demographics.
- Expansion of molecular diagnostic testing platforms in clinical microbiology and oncology
- Growth of the outpatient laboratory practice by 5-10% annually between 2013 and 2023.
- Integrated pathology services. GU Pathology and Medical Renal Pathology performed at WCM campus. NYPQ pathologist provides 0.5 FTE breast subspecialty coverage at WCM.
