Education

The Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at NewYork-Presbyterian (NYP)/Weill Cornell Medicine (WCM) offers educational programs for individuals at all levels of training — from medical students to residents, fellows, and practicing professionals. Our programs combine the resources of an Ivy League medical school — Weill Cornell Medicine — and one of the world's leading medical centers, NYP/WCM. We are centrally located within a collaborative scientific and medical community that includes the Hospital for Special Surgery, Memorial-Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, and The Rockefeller University.

Fellowships

Fellowship Program participants undergo rigorous curriculum review and oversight by the institutional Graduate Medical Education Committee, and fellows benefit from exposure to our world-renowned faculty and pathology material, and are involved in review of consultation material, clinicopathologic correlation and conferences, as well as participation in resident teaching and a clinical and/or basic science research project.

Residency Program

Our flexible four-year residency training program leads to board certification in anatomic pathology, laboratory medicine, or a combination of both. There are 23 pathology residency positions. In addition to basic educational core rotations, the curriculum is tailored to each resident's career goals to prepare them for an academic career in pathology, the subspecialty practice of pathology, or the practice of modern general pathology.

Medical Student Education

Medical students learn about the pathophysiology of disease during the second year, through didactic lectures and small group tutorials which use a case-based approach to learning. During years three and four, medical students may choose a two- or four-week elective rotation to experience the day-to-day activities of pathologists firsthand. Students rotate through the department, shadowing residents, fellows, and faculty.

Physician Scientist Training Program

The Physician Scientist Training Program is committed to training the next generation of physician scientist leaders in Clinical Pathology and Anatomic Pathology. The program focuses on providing support and mentorship through the clinical and postdoctoral training years to prepare trainees for highly competitive tenure track academic positions as an independent physician scientist.

Grossing Video Library

The Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine has created a popular educational Grossing Video Library for residents that has been viewed more than 100,000 times. Current volumes of this series include grossing a colon (cancer), brain, bladder, heart, and lung.  These videos can be found here on our website or on our YouTube channel.
