Breast Pathology

The Division of Breast Pathology at NewYork-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medicine is one of the largest dedicated comprehensive breast pathology services in the United States, with a consultation rate of more than 2,000 cases annually as well as some 2,800 in-house cases each year. The expertise of our subspecialty-trained breast pathologists is widely sought by pathologists, clinicians, and patients requesting an expert opinion in breast pathology from a service with a great depth and breadth of experience and volume. Our breast pathologists have been consistently recognized in New York Magazine's "Best Doctors in New York" issue and Castle Connolly's renowned America's Top Doctors-New York Metro Area Edition. We offer our clients the speed and accuracy of results that can make a life-saving difference.

Referring physicians and patients benefit from:

  • Consultation and case review with a diagnostic expert in breast pathology
  • A state-of-the-art, full-service laboratory
  • A rapid turnaround time, typically 48 business hours from receipt of slides
  • Utilization of a large array of immunohistochemical markers, including estrogen receptor, progesterone receptor, and HER-2/neu
  • Fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) for breast cancers with equivocal HER-2/neu results

In addition to clinical services, our pathologists conduct research, develop new tests, and publish widely in the field. For example, they developed the Minimal Carcinoma Triple Stain — a multiplex immunostain of three commonly employed antibodies — and demonstrated that it is an accurate tissue-conserving method useful for diagnosing small, morphologically problematic foci of breast carcinomas. (Ross DS et al. The Diagnostic Utility of the Minimal Carcinoma Triple Stain in Breast Carcinomas. Am J Clin Pathol. 2013;139:62-70.) This stain is now routinely used at Weill Cornell as well as at other centers.

Education is another mission of the Division of Breast Pathology. The Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine offers a highly competitive one-year Breast Pathology Fellowship which prepares graduates for a career in academia or private practice.
