Thoracic Pathology

The Thoracic Pathology Division at New York Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medicine provides expertise in a wide variety of diagnostic interpretation, including neoplastic and non-neoplastic lung diseases, tumors of the mediastinum, and cardiac biopsies.

Thoracic tumors are reviewed by expert pulmonary pathologists, and the results are presented in the context of overall patient care in a weekly Thoracic Tumor Board, with attendance by oncology, pulmonary medicine, radiation oncology, radiology and thoracic surgery. This approach assures that specific aspects of the patient’s condition are appreciated by the different services, optimizing care. This also incorporates information obtained from state of the art molecular analytics available through the molecular pathology laboratory.

Focusing on non-neoplastic disease, both outside slide review and in house surgical biopsies provide experience in both the common and unusual lung diseases. These cases include pulmonary infections, new onset/diagnosis of interstitial diseases, and pulmonary hypertension. When indicated, ancillary studies such as immunofluorescence and electron microscopy are available. A multidisciplinary approach is used to most accurately characterize the patient’s diagnosis, with close collaboration with medicine, radiology, rheumatology, and surgery. Cases are reviewed in a monthly multidisciplinary conference. This approach is essential to assure accurate non-neoplastic lung disease pathologic diagnosis.

The diagnostic services provided lay the groundwork and experience for the education of medical students as part of their Health Illness and Disease Course. In addition, diagnostic pathology and molecular experience fuels research in early lung cancer, adenocarcinoma, mesothelioma, pulmonary hypertension, and interstitial lung disease classification.
