Cytopathology Fellowship

The fellowship position for 2025-2026 has been filled.
The Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine of NewYork-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medicine offers a one-year ACGME-approved fellowship that includes training in diagnostic gynecological and non-gynecological exfoliative cytopathology, fine-needle aspiration biopsy, specimen preparation, and laboratory management. The Papanicolaou Cytopathology Laboratory accessioned more than 58,000 specimens last year, of which approximately 13,000 were non-gynecological specimens and of those, over 4,800 were fine-needle aspirations, offering a broad range of specimens from which the trainee may learn. Training includes the performance and on-site interpretation of fine-needle aspirations of palpable and non-palpable masses obtained under radiologic guidance — including transabdominal and endoscopic ultrasound, navigational, computed tomography (CT scanning), and stereotactic guidance. Additionally, a six- eight week rotation focused entirely on ultrasound guided fine needle aspiration at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center is also offered. The Fellow is expected to complete one project in cytopathology for presentation at a national meeting with an additional goal of completing the project as a peer reviewed published manuscript. Graduating fellows are fully prepared for a career in either an academic or private practice setting.
