Medical Student Education

This elective provides exposure to the wide range of clinical services and research activities of the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine. Students can rotate through both anatomic and clinical pathology. The specific rotations in this elective will be customized to meet the career goals of the individual student. Areas that can be covered in Anatomic pathology include autopsy, gastrointestinal, gynecologic, genitourinary, hematopathology, pulmonary, head and neck/endocrine, neuropathology, cytopathology, etc. Areas that can be covered in Laboratory Medicine include clinical chemistry, hematology, microbiology, molecular pathology, cytogenetics and transfusion medicine. Work is supervised on an individual basis by the faculty and senior members of the house staff. Students have the opportunity to attend departmental conferences and lectures and participate in sign out sessions. At the end of the rotation, students are expected to deliver a 10 minute presentation. The elective should be arranged with prior approval of the sponsor and advance scheduling of at least two months prior. Completion of two clerkships is advisable.
