Dr. Sandra J. Shin Appointed to Vice Chairman for Education

It is with great pleasure that I announce the appointment of Sandra J. Shin, MD, to Vice Chairman for Education, a newly created position in the Department effective July 1, 2016. Dr. Shin will continue to serve in the capacity as Director of the Pathology Residency Training Program.

Sandra J. Shin, MD Vice Chairman for Education

In her capacity as Vice Chairman for Education, Dr. Shin will oversee the departmental fellowship programs, in addition to the residency training program. She will also expand her involvement with medical students, particularly those who are interested in pursuing a career in pathology. Dr. Shin and I will be closely engaged in further developing a strategic plan for the future direction for education in the department.

Dr. Shin received her medical degree from Albany Medical College in 1996. Subsequently, she completed training in anatomic and clinical pathology at the then New York Hospital-Cornell Medical Center in 2001. During this time, she completed a fellowship in breast pathology under the internationally renowned breast pathologist Dr. Paul Peter Rosen. She received the Distinguished Housestaff Achievement Award from the Medical Center Alumni Council in 2000. She was appointed Instructor in Pathology at Weill Cornell Medical College in 2001, promoted to Assistant Professor in 2002, and then to Associate Professor in 2008. Since 2009, Dr. Shin has served as chief of breast pathology and in this capacity, has overseen the breast pathology service and breast pathology consultation service. Since 2010, she has also directed the breast pathology fellowship program. She currently holds the title of Professor of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine. Dr. Shin has a long track record of mentoring residents, fellows and junior faculty, particularly those with a focus in breast pathology. She has spent her entire pathology career at the Weill Cornell Medical Center where she has enjoyed an exemplary career with significant contributions to clinical service, research, education and administration.

Please join me in congratulating Dr. Shin in her new role.

Sincerely,
Daniel M. Knowles, M.D.
