The Department of Pathology at NewYork-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medicine offers a one-year Renal Pathology Fellowship (medical diseases of the kidney), including renal transplantation, under the direction of Surya V. Seshan, M.D., Chief of Renal Pathology. The Renal Pathology Fellowship aims to develop competency in all aspects of special handling and processing of renal biopsies, using a clinicopathological approach to the interpretation of medical (non-neoplastic) renal diseases, regardless of the source of the kidney tissue (percutaneous needle or open biopsy, nephrectomy, or autopsy kidney specimens). Since the renal pathologist is part of a multidisciplinary team in patient management, clinical correlation and active communication with our clinical colleagues are paramount.
The Renal Pathology Laboratory receives nearly 800 cases a year, of which nearly 300 are renal transplant biopsies and about 30 are from transplant nephrectomies. The remaining specimens are from native kidney diseases, representing a wide variety of interesting and sometimes challenging glomerular, tubulo-interstitial, and vascular lesions, providing a unique opportunity for a trainee in this field. Training in renal pathology includes the examination of kidney biopsies by light and electron microscopy and immunohistochemistry, while learning to apply other molecular techniques as necessary or for research.
