Director of the Institutional Biobank

We are pleased to announce the establishment of an Institutional Biobank as a resource for clinical and translational research requiring biospecimens from normal and disease states. The Biobank will facilitate coordinated tissue procurement, processing, and storage in a CAP/CLIA-accredited environment. The consolidation of WCMC biobanking efforts under this shared resource will ensure procurement of high quality biospecimens, compliance with regulatory guidelines, maximization of biospecimen utility, and global and equitable access to biospecimens by investigators.

To lead these efforts, WCMC has appointed Giorgio Inghirami, M.D., Professor of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine, to the newly created role of Director of the Institutional Biobank.

Dr. Inghirami is a distinguished scientist and accomplished academic hematopathologist, internationally recognized as an expert in the morphologic, immunohistochemical, flow cytometric and molecular diagnosis and characterization of hematologic malignancies. Dr. Inghirami has pioneered new breakthroughs in molecular medicine by discovering pathogenetic mechanisms, identifying novel therapeutic targets and developing animal models that are of paramount importance for understanding tumor biology. We are confident that Dr. Inghirami's experience and leadership will be an essential component of our collective biobanking efforts.

As Director of the Institutional Biobank, Dr. Inghirami will report to the Biobank Steering Committee, chaired by Dr. Lewis Cantley. The operation of Institutional Biobank will be managed as a WCMC shared resource, with ultimate oversight provided by the Vice Dean for Research, Dr. Gary Koretzky.

Dr. Inghirami will continue to serve as Director of the Immunopathology Laboratory in the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine.

Please join us in congratulating Dr. Inghirami on his new appointment and thanking him for his leadership. We look forward to the evolution of this resource to support the advancement of novel discoveries that will impact the health of our patients.
