Dr. Barry Sleckman appointed Executive Vice Chairman for Pathology and Laboratory Medicine

It is with great pleasure that I announce the appointment of Barry Sleckman, MD, PhD to Executive Vice Chairman for Pathology and Laboratory Medicine, a newly created position in the Department effective April 22, 2016.  Dr. Sleckman will continue to serve in the capacity as Vice Chairman for Experimental Pathology.

Barry Sleckman, MD, PhD
Executive Vice Chairman for Pathology and Laboratory Medicine

In his capacity as Executive Vice Chairman, Dr. Sleckman will support me in overseeing all matters related to space development, faculty recruitment, education and the clinical enterprise. Dr. Sleckman and I will be closely engaged in further developing a strategic plan for the future direction of the department.

Dr. Sleckman graduated with a combined M.D. and Ph.D. in Immunology from Harvard University in 1989.  Subsequently, he completed an internship and research residency in Internal Medicine and fellowship in Infectious Diseases at the Brigham and Women’s Hospital in 1993. He then carried out post-doctoral studies in Molecular Immunology in the laboratory of Dr. Frederick Alt at Harvard Medical School between 1994 and 1998.  In 1998 he started his laboratory as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Pathology and Immunology at the Washington University School of Medicine.  His laboratory has focused on elucidating pathways important for immune system development and on understanding the function of DNA damage response pathways including more recently, those that are unique to cancer cells and may serve as targets for a novel class of cancer therapeutics.  In 2009 Dr. Sleckman became the Conan Professor of laboratory Medicine and Chief of the Division of Laboratory and Genomic Medicine at the Washington University School of Medicine, positions he held until he moved to our Department in 2015.  While at Washington University Dr. Sleckman served as the Director of the Graduate Program in Immunology, was the founding Director of the Physician Scientist Training Program in the Department of Pathology and Immunology and held several positions in the Siteman Cancer Center, including Associate Director for Basic Science.  Dr. Sleckman holds the appointment of Professor of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at Weill Cornell.

Please join me in congratulating Dr. Sleckman in his new role.

Sincerely,

Daniel M. Knowles, M.D.
